If you have not yet heard, Kim Kardashian and her sisters have teamed up with MasterCard to offer a prepaid debit card aimed at teens and young adults. To fans, this may sound exciting … until you realize it may just be one of the worst prepaid cards on the market.
If anything, this will teach those trying to learn about financial responsibility how to spot a ripoff and what not to look for in a card.
1. The Fee
To get started with this card, you must pay a $59.95 annual fee. “What is this,” you might ask, “a premium credit card?” Nope, it’s a debit card. Perhaps this initial fee goes to funding the Kardashian family’s shopping addiction.
2. The Monthly Charge
To maintain your Kardashian Kard, a monthly fee of $9.95 is taken out of your account every month. Yes, just for the privilege of having Kim, Khloe and Kourtney on your plastic you’ll need to fork over ten bucks. Maybe “fork over” isn’t the best term here, so let’s say “throw away” instead.
3. Bill Charges
Planning on paying your bills with the Kardashian Kard? Sounds like a smart concept because you would save on mailing in your payments with a stamp and envelope. Unfortunately, you’ll have to pay $2.00 to pay your bills with this card, making the Kardashians more money than the U.S. Postal Service.
4. ATM Withdrawals
The great thing about debit cards is they let you easily get cash for those late-night taco benders. The Kardashians realize this, and that’s why they levy a $2.50 fee for every ATM withdrawal on the card. That’s $2.50 more than what most banks charge for a free ATM card linked to your checking account.
5. Customer Service
Want to talk to a human about the Kardashian Kard? No problem. But it’s going to cost you. If you dial up the number on the back of that card, you’ll be charged $1.50 just to speak to customer service. So if you have a problem, it’s going to end up costing you, no matter what. Enjoy!
In the End
There are many better prepaid cards on the market than this financial disaster. In addition, if you have a bank account, you can usually get a debit card for your account, just for being a customer. In the end, you should consider the alternatives before handing the Kardashians any more of your hard-earned Kash.
